Reading all the comments it seems fans are split on SG and if we have made real progress which I get only 2 points better off than last season doesn't suggest much progress but the run in Europe was a big step forward sure we didn't maybe beat the cream of Europe but we still had some good results against decent opposition and we have managed a win in an old firm game. i can't recall a team that has beat us by more than a single goal in domestic football. Our biggest problems under SG at present are our ability to create and score goals and our discipline. I do believe Murphy and Dorrans have been missed and sadly Grezda hasn't yet provided what I believe Gerrard was hoping for. How many points has our discipline cost us this season I reckon probably 5 points and often more so in games that follow with suspension. For example everyone picks on Morales getting sent off and rightly so but lots have forgotten Arfields sending off against Hearts. I'm one of Arfields biggest fans and the games that followed where Arfield didn't play and was in a good run of form we dropped points Aberdeen home lose and draw against 10 man Dundee. We have missed Morelos when he has been suspended but when Arfield has missed out through injury or suspension we havdropped a lot of points. Hibs draw at home we drew away at Hibs he went off at half time we lost to Aberdeen and drew at Dundee when he was missing. Ok we have dropped points in other games when he has played but I think when fit and available he is an important player like Morelos.

I think SG has made mistakes but there is enough evidence to suggest progress. Next season is when he needs to be judged and we need to try and bring in 3 really good players that improve starting 11 rather than bringing in a vast number of players which we needed to do last year but has obviously meant SG hasn't had a settled team most of which has been through injury or suspension although not playing Katic more often and finding a settler back 4 has been a big failing.

How come Stevie G is getting a free ride for our poor performances? Warburton said his first season in the Prem would be a rebuilding year but when results weren’t going that well people called for his head, yet the same happens with Stevie G everybody seems to be saying give him a chance he’ll come right. That’s a double standard and just because he was a good player doesn’t mean he’s going to be a good coach. The lack of penetration and scoring is reminiscent of the style of England when he was in midfield. He’s starting to look like Morelos. never happy. It’s not always the players it may be the style they are playing which is down to him.

I felt the change of formation didn't help Arfield who I believe is better at the tip of the diamond out of the options we have at present and although Kent had a good game he is a winger and not the player to play at the top of the diamond. I think SG has some difficult decisions to make around personnel and formations. You play the diamond and I think you lose something from Kent and Arfield plus you don't get the pressing game as you have Defoe playing and Candeas as the winger is sacrificed.

If you go with 4-3-3 like old firm game with Mccorie in instead of Davis you get the pressing game but you lose a goal threat and Defoe and Davis on bench unless both play and Morelos is dropped. Can Morelos play out wide on the right? My feeling is probably not because would he cross for Defoe in the middle?

Lots of tough decisions ahead for SG that he needs to figure out quickly!

I completely agree! We tried to change formation earlier in the season and it did not work, we perform much better with 3 in the middle and 2 wingers. For me Defoe should be used as a sub brought on for the last 30mins to kill games off or try and turn a game around. Also I am pleased to see Davis back but MrCrorie has proved over the last few games that he is vital to our midfield and allows Jack/ Arfield to play.

I am just hoping we don't have them on 'if fit we play' deals, if so then we may not have seen the end of this formation.

If you look at the top four teams in the league what's the difference between us and Celtic, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen for me it's consistancy of the team and manager. A lot of the other teams players have played the last few seasons together under the same manager. Aberdeen and Kilmarnock have good managers who's teams are well drilled. Celtic obviously have had the money to buy better quality and a manager who has been able to build solid foundations for the last few years with us making many bad decisions in managers and transfers.

This is not an excuse because I do think we shouldn't have dropped so many points away from home this season however I hope the penny has dropped for SG unlike it did for stubborn Warburton and his no plan B or hopeless Pedro and he needs to play a team away from home that can first and foremost win the battle. We were out thought against Kilmarnock we didn't press them like we did Celtic in fact they pressed our defence and it looked like how Boyata was against us.

I see the press and some fans on here quick to criticise Defoe and Davis. It's only one game and I believe both will come good.

1.) 25 Jan 2019 10:24:13

Signing Defoe and Davis is not the way ahead both are past it and having only a limited time left. McAuley should be nowhere near us at 39 and it’s not good that he plays in front of Katic. Worrall is awful and won’t be here next year so why are we wasting with him someone like Halkett would be a much better proposition. For me we have fallen into the same trap as trying to stop Celtic winning the league immediately rather than trying to build. Of the 11 who started on Wednesday 5 were either on loan or nearly 40. There is a good chance none of these players will be there next season so where does that leave us?

2.) 25 Jan 2019 11:15:13
How can you say Celtic have had the money to buy better quality? we have spent more than them, they only brought Edouard in as they were able to sell Armstrong.

23 Jan 2019 21:58:43
Gutted about tonight's result. Its easy after the event to be critical but does Steve G need to consult Walter Smith about setting up a team away from home against good teams. I think Ross Mccorie was badly missed tonight we weren't winning the ball high enough up the pitch and I think airfield is more effective in number 10 role with Kent out wide.

Our league challenge is far from over but we are going to have to go on a really good run up until the split and see where that takes us.

Do we stick with Defoe and Morelos up front or go back to 4-3-3?

1.) 23 Jan 2019 22:26:31
Straight back to 443

Ur bang on badly missed young McCorrie.

2.) 23 Jan 2019 22:40:05
We definitely got it wrong tonight however if Morelos scores from the corner we go on and win the game. With hindsight we should have went for the same team that started against Celtic but replaced Goldson. We could then have made better subs if it wasn’t going our way. Lots to ponder for the gaffer and we need 3 pts on Sunday.

3.) 23 Jan 2019 22:54:23
Kilmarnock was the wrong team to change the formula. We needed points and the previous formation worked. Obviously he wanted Defoe and it’s costing a pretty penny so he wants to find a way of getting him team. Kilmarnock is to well drilled to try new things against. We were unlucky in the sense Worrell was SHOCKING and again proved why he shouldn’t be anywhere near a rangers jersey.

4.) 23 Jan 2019 23:22:38
A young up and coming player who was a standout in the old firm game dropped for a has been midfielder who couldn’t get a game for a very poor side. Katic another good young player can’t get a game for another has been 39 year old and a scare in Worrell.

Looking at the fixtures list post split we are going to have to be taking near max points to stay in title race and away record needs to improve a lot. I think we can do it but max points against Kilmarnock and Livingston away in Jan is a MUST.

Celtic have 8 home games from 13 and only really tricky away games are Kilmarnock, Hearts and St Johnstone

We have 5 homes games from 12 and tricky away games against Kili, Livingston, Aberdeen, Hibs, Celtic and Motherwell. We dropped points in 5 of the 6 reverse fixtures however on the positive we should have won against Aberdeen, Hibs and Motherwell I can't see us playing that badly against Livingston again and we have the believe that we can go up against Celtic and win.

It's going to take a very special effort from our team but if we are within 3 points come the split GAME ON!

1.) 12 Jan 2019 19:16:41
Well said BRW11. Davis and Defoe will make a difference and Dorrans will hopefully be back soon. I agree that maximum points against Killie and Livingston is essential then kick off from there. I hope SG plays a steady back four now. With no European games to worry about this is important.

(4-4-2) McGregor; Tavernier, Goldson, Worrall, Barisic (if fit) ; Jack, McCrorie, Arfield, Davis; Morelos, Defoe

Halliday and Candeias will be useful on the bench.

2.) 12 Jan 2019 21:10:36
If Gerrard changes to 4-4-2, I think it would that team doiger. Except I think he'd drop mccrorie, put Davis in his place and play Kent or candieas. He might keep to the side that beat c*ltic and gradually introduce Davis and Defoe?

I agree Blue dreamer on a free this is a good signing he is a creative player who has been a consistent performer at championship level for many years. Will provide assists and goals. How good is our squad beginning to look. :-)

I think people who say not good enough for Europe are getting ahead of themselves we are lucky to attract Davis and Defoe and that has a lot to today with our manager we can’t go out spending the money Celtic can on players and Allen and SG are getting in a good mix of potential and established players.

Can’t believe I’m excited about Cowdenbeath in the cup but I just want to see how Defoe does.

Davis on 6 month loan deal is a shock but my feeling is we will have him and Defoe both just for 6 months unless maybe we win the title. Bournemouth have the option to recall him in the summer so I’d be surprised if they didn’t take up that option.

F-U I’m with you.

2 games in and people saying he has made mistakes think people need a realty check SG has laid the foundations for a solid defence which was 100% the right place to start and he has had bad luck with injuries already.

Yes I will confess like most other fans I’m disappointed to see Greg Docherty go out on loan I was hoping he would turn him into a mainstay of the midfield but I have faith that he believes a loan move will do Doc good.

A few people on here have mentioned a 5-3-2 formation with Tav and Dec Jon as full backs but playing that system were would Murphy or Candeas play? SG will play 3 energetic midfielders for me and in a 5-3-2 that would mean one up top and a number 10 or two strikers which I think is unlikely.

My guess is a 4-3-3 with Tav and Dec Jon as full backs to begin with but in difficult away games Jon F coming into one of the full back positions to make us stronger at the back. In this formation Murphy and Candeas can play and we have been linked with a few wingers too so on that basis I’m less sure about a 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 as I don’t think it accommodates our wingers.

Super cooper Ignore all those people with their sarcastic comments, everyone is entitled to their opinion and you often raise some interesting points for debate.

I agree Brophy did well the other night although until Worrells howler he hadn’t had a look in and worrell was comfortable. The mistake and the goal seemed to galvanise the whole Kili team and our defence looked a bag of nerves for the rest of the game.

I haven’t seen enough of Brophy to know if he would be a good signing for us.

I personally think the days of the big striker like Hatley, Ferguson and Carroll as you mention are a dying bread. Most teams play one up and they tend to be a smaller striker or one who can do multiple roles, think Aquero, Kane, Rashford etc.

Come on supercooper you can’t be serious with that poll. George Best all the way. Frequently discussed in best ever world 11s the other 3 never get a look in. I’ve heard Dave Mackay’s name mentioned more in world 11 teams than the other 3.

Given there is a lot of talk at the minute around mental health illness and companies promoting speaking up about it and it not being something to be ashamed of it’s another example of how outdated and backward the SFA are.

It’s poor the SFA have made this decision. Yes Gazza was far from a perfect human and I’m not condoning for a minute that he hit his wife but as you say supercoop he has a mental illness and he and that shouldn’t stop us recognising his contribution to Scottish football.

Well said BearMode91 you beat me to it why create a cons list after our best performance of the season, unbelievable!

Probably same person who said worrrall was f&@king horrible after one poor game against Livingston.
