Yesterday morning I was heading to London on the train - which I have to do a couple of times a month - and managed to get seated in First near a familiar face. Graeme Park was sitting at the opposite table, reading something inside a ring binder. He was travelling with a younger guy who was likely an assistant. The guy on the phone a lot - texting. I had a few hours to spend so I pretended I didn't know who he was. The weather was grim and the train stopped a couple of times. I smiled over to him as lunch was served and commented on it being a rotten day. Mr Park pulled a face and shrugged.

When his mate left the table I worked up the courage to ask if I was right- and he was the Rangers man. He smiled and nodded. I said it had been a bad week for the club and he must be tired of it all. He didn't bat an eye and looked straight at me; "Don't believe everything you hear. " he said quietly. I couldn't think of what to say and just nodded. Next thing his assistant returned and was anxious to talk to Mr Park- I looked away and pretended to read my phone.

I heard the young guy say; "Tomorrow is fine. two. his detail. agent. " I was straining to hear more but they were mostly looking at the folder. I looked at Mr park and saw that the reflection in his glasses was coloured yellow. I looked away and tried to think what they were so interested in. I got up and went to the toilet that led me past their table. They closed the folder but I saw a yellow shield logo. As the pages turned. It didn't ring a bell, but while I was at the loo I looked up club logos, thinking it might be a match. Nothing appeared.

It got boring after that and I fell asleep. When I woke, we were coming in to London and the table opposite was empty. Last night I had another look on the web and found the logo. Burton Albion.

5.) 11 Dec 2017 22:13:14
Beautiful story, can I ask if there is a sequel to this? Or even a trilogy? Although I know that’s an awful lot to ask. I would be really interested to see what happens to the main protagonists

The Gio Shuffle

Gio missed the boat that day, he left the shack
But that was all he missed, and he ain't comin' back
"At the Louden bar in a juke joint car, he made a stop
Just long enough to grab a handle off the top"

"Next stop, Seville-town", Gio put the money down, and let it roll
He said, "One more job oughta get it
One last shot 'fore we quit it
One for the squad"

Gio, whoa, oh-oh-oh
Not for the money, he's for the show
Gio's a-way-to-go-oh-no, no.
Gio, whoa, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh
He said, "One more sub oughta get it
One last shot 'fore I get it
No more for the squad. "

Gio be runnin', havin' great big fun until he got the note
Saying, "Tow the line or blow it, " and that was all they wrote
He be makin' like a beeline headin' for the group fine, goin' for broke
Sayin', "One more hit oughta do it
Three points, ain't nothin' to it
One more from the squad. "

Gio, whoa, oh-oh-oh
He's for the money, they're for the show
Gio's a-away-tomorrrow-oh-oh, oh-oh
Gio, whoa, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
"One more job oughta get it
One last shot, then they quit it
No more in the squad. "

Gio, whoa, oh-oh-oh
They're for the money, he's going to go
Gio's a-way-no-stay-go-oh-oh
Gio, whoa, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
"One more job oughta get it"
. No more in the squad. "

with apologies to Boz Scaggs, and the readers.

The answer does not lie with changing the coach/ manager. Its an easy answer, but the wrong one in my view. We must calmly look at what has changed since the amazing run in Europe, and a creditable performance at home last season. Players were sold, and the recruitment was inadequate, and its plain to see.

These results are dire, the players are off it -and seemingly not up to it, and it's embarrassing, but he sacking of Gio will not bring success unless there are better players available. Injuries are an issue for sure, but Rangers have recruited poorly, and on the cheap.

Anyone in charge of the current squad would struggle IMO. Remember that it was the same backroom staff that steered the team to Seville - sack them if you like, but the problems are not in the dugout.

1.) 12 Nov 2022 21:54:13
Don’t believe a work of it a manger who can motive the players and have different tactics would get better results.

2.) 12 Nov 2022 22:10:49
The problems aren't just in the dugout true. But he is responsible for what happens on the park. Its his job to organise, chose tactics, inspire, motivate, train, to get the best out them. R u saying noone could get this group of players to perform better?

3.) 12 Nov 2022 22:23:04
The style of play is horrendous he has to go.

4.) 12 Nov 2022 22:31:42
Billy some of what you say I agree with.
You say the players are off it, embarrassing but stick with the manager cause we have no money.
If he can’t motivate the group available now then why wait. Apart from the long term injuries we had most of the other injured players available for parts in the season and results were still poor and money was spent.
The problem I have with the players available is I don’t think they are busting a gut to pull on the jersey and perform to their maximum. Yes the players are to blame but the manager carry’s the can, He has to find a way to get the best out of every player in that squad and from what I’ve witnessed from the start of this season he has failed to do that for whatever reason.
He said at the start of the season that these group of players were better than last season, No they are not.
Someone has to come in and try and weed out the players who don’t want to be there then instill belief and confidence, and effort into the players that are there.
We all wanted it to work out for Gio but we need to do what’s best even if it’s to bring an interim manager in at first till we find a replacement.

5.) 12 Nov 2022 22:50:04
Wow just wow ?????‍♂️?‍♂️?‍♂️?‍♂️?‍♂️ who sets the team up to play the game plan lol.

12 Nov 2022 18:26:31
Sacking Gio will not bring success unless there better players available. Sack him if you like, but the problems are not in the dugout. We have recruited poorly, and on the cheap.

What do we lack? A central defender with real presence, a midfielder with smarts who can pass the ball, and a number 10 with pace

Anyone in charge of the current squad would struggle. It was the same backroom staff that steered them to Seville - If the squad is not revised, and a shift in mindset, we'll be back here next November calling for the replacement manager to be shown the door.

BillyTwoPies

1.) 12 Nov 2022 20:39:27
Billy, how about a competent goalie and a right winger with end product.

2.) 12 Nov 2022 20:47:12
Have to disagree billy gio should go, I would explain but iam sure all down this page has most of it from style of play to getting the best out the players and so on, just my opinion.

3.) 12 Nov 2022 20:52:57
We're being embarrassed on and off the park- the Greek/ Australian has brought in a few decent players and with a positive footballing philosophy has made us look dull unimaginative and pedestrian - helped by Gios style of football, a loss of form for a number of key players and some long term injuries . Off the park we have been taken to the cleaners, again, by Ashley - surely our legal advisors are not incompetent and therefore its the directors who are responsible for taking decisions that cost the club millions.

4.) 12 Nov 2022 20:54:28
Part of the problem is the dugout and gio boring style of play it’s been a big problem all season.

5.) 12 Nov 2022 21:07:31
Billy got to disagree. I'm not for slating Gio as I think his problems are heightened by the injuries and I don't think he's had any luck since the beginning of the season ( wonder whether the medical and conditioning parts we lost with gerrard were the bigger loses) but my thoughts are it will take gio to go for us to win anything this season the players are not playing for him. The only thing I can see in his favour is that he's made the club money.

6.) 12 Nov 2022 21:19:21
that’s what I’m saying changing manager will necessarily make us successful the players we have are just not good enough recruitment has been terrible until we refresh this squad success will not come, and to do that takes money do we have that? I don’t know but spending 5/ 7 mill getting rid of management team will not help.

7.) 12 Nov 2022 21:27:47
It’s not a change in players IMO we have a super talented 10 as good as we’ll see at Gers in Tilman we have plenty good enough CMs to compete and win at this level and I honestly think goldson and Davies have it in them to be a quality Partnership that was Cut short with CGs injury! The players told everything we needed to know in Pre season with the emphasis being on the ball and not the hard yards you have to be The fittest, run the hardest and be the mentally strongest first the rest will follow the quality is there IMO the style and Condition and mentality is not clearly shown by the injury record at the moment and the lack of fight.

8.) 12 Nov 2022 21:48:02
I disagree Billy, the problem most definitely is in the dugout.
The players have simply stopped playing for the current manager and when that happens the only thing you can do is is terminate his contract. It’s a harsh fact of football life but the same players will undoubtedly raise their game if a different character comes in .

9.) 12 Nov 2022 21:55:19
In November the World Cup will be on and we won’t of played any games so how can we ask to sack a replacement manager who won’t of played a single game.

10.) 12 Nov 2022 22:16:14
We've not had a decent right winger for years but insist on playing that system. Repeating the same failings and hoping for different outcome is madness. Its not as if the left wing has been performing that well that we'd keep formation.

06 Nov 2022 17:26:58
I understand the frustration, and I agree that the recent games are hard to watch. Reading the posts here, the opinions point to the manager, the board, and recruitment. I can't agree that the solution is to sack Gio. If the problem lies elsewhere, then the poisoned chalice is just passed to the next hopeful in the dugout.

I believe that the difficulty lies with recruitment. I can count on one hand, the players I'd retain from the squad. Wilson knows a good player when he see's one, so what is the problem? Money - and a decent sum - needs to be directed to a rebuild. Let Gio run with it for the rest of the season, and back him in recruitment and give him every chance, otherwise he's not had a fair shot.

Oh - and what is wrong with bringing on the young players, and keeping a grip on them?

I'd like to put an idea out there, just to see if there is any agreement from across the readership.

Can Rangers aim to be THE Scottish club? By that I mean the board should not only attract the best of Scottish talent into the youth set up, but also make it its mission to buy the best of the talent from other clubs. This is not earth shattering in its vision, but simply put- it would make a virtue out of necessity, and build a USP that would maybe rally support beyond the present fan base. It would set Rangers apart from certain other teams. Should there not be a Scottish Club, just as there is a Catalan, or Bavarian team that carries that hope in Europe?

I'm not saying that Rangers should never recruit from abroad, but perhaps make that the exception rather than the rule. Would that work? Imagine what the team would be like if most current Scottish international players were signed to Rangers; could they take on Celtic and win?

SG should target the obvious rising stars in the premiership, and do what McCoist should have done years ago- build an attacking team that can entertain, win, and even turn a profit.

BillyTwoPies

1.) 05 May 2018 02:28:39
I really do totally agree with the sentiment, however why would in our current economic position a world club like Rangers be inward looking with regards to players, we should and hopefully will be casting our net to all corners of the globe attracting the best. Which I will admit the best is sometimes not enough, you have to be cut from something a bit special to succeed at RANGERS. Aye Ready or in scouse, let's go!

2.) 05 May 2018 07:04:36
Have yous seen the Scotland team recently? Ross county would give them a game!

3.) 05 May 2018 09:00:59
Sentiment is sound, but it's not practical. I would like a solid Base of home talent tho.

In terms of signings tho, there's no good Scottish forwards, and few defenders.

Mcginn is probably the pick right now.

McInnes is a solid coach, and has huge insight. Sure he is cautious but he’ll set out any team to be hard to play against.

Whoever gets the job will have the same problems as any of the recent guys - quality of players. Serious investment needed in a playmaker and a striker, or this squad will still come second.

Look at the poor response to the vacancy just now - and that tells you everything about doubts folk have about coming to Scotland. The best option is to find a diamond who sees the job as a career-making stage. Look no further than Spurs. Picking up a guy like AP may not be an easy task, but that’s what the board are for.

Is there a succession plan at all at Ibrox? Succession of management, succession of key players - no evidence of forethought.
I’d like to see McInnes on the short list- safe hands. As for other candidates - find a diamond with ambition.

From press conference.

"Rangers had received £17.7m in loans from shareholders and other investors and borrowed a £3m from Close Brothers. King says loans will be converted to equity after successful share issue.

"There will be a balance between the conversion of loans versus raising of new cash, " he explained.

"At this stage there is nothing external other than existing shareholders and investors. We are not talking to anyone new, who is not there already. "

Gerrard has not been given a figure of how much he will have to spend.

"We will continue to invest in the squad and we will be a net investor. We will provide additional net funds. We don't put figures on that because we can't. "

"It depends on how many players Steven wants to keep. We haven't even discussed it. Right now we don't have a player plan. "

None of this is good news. the reported £6 million will be sliced to offset loans already spent. I was ready to dig out the cash for my season ticket, but its just the same old show.

King, you're a sand dancer.

Aye, but what other footballing nation would define itself by how it’s judged by its neighbour? I think its sad that somehow we’ve ended up with such a poor opinion of our game that we look to the commentators of the English game to find value here.

Its a distorted way to see ourselves, and its only because Sky and BT don't do right by the Scottish viewers and put in equivalent funds to buy the rights to our game as they once did south of the border. Of course, our game isn’t worth it, is it? But if 8% (population pro-rata) of that fat fee was available to our Premiership, we’d see a growth in our game to redress the balance.

"Hi Graeme, come in, take a seat. Drink? No, quite right. as you will know, we’re in a bind, with McInness being so rude. Anyway, we thought that you might like to try your hand again, having done so well last time! We have every confidence in you, and you know we have your back.

“Thanks, you know I love the club! I’ll do my best, David! "

“Thats Mr King, to you. "

Murty deserves some respect, and anyone with a fair mind would see that he was not supported by the board in the days leading up to the biggest games of the season. I’d go as far as to say that he was undermined. Remember, it was the board who plucked him from junior coach, to take on a huge challenge.

Imagine that you’ve been set a task at work that anyone of your colleagues would find tough. You do your best, you step up, and then the bosses start to speak publicly about your replacement, even as you a prepare for the big event. It beggars belief.

Here’s my point; if Stevie G is watching this - and he’s as smart as everyone says - then he’s bound to wonder if one day, it’ll be himself who’ll be shat on from a great height.
