Use our rumours form to send us rangers transfer rumours.

Responding to zicos, I believe a 352 can be useful and that tav and Waldo could thrive in this set up but I also believe that this system could have problems as a team like Dundee sitting deep while playing 1 up top would make our back 3 pretty much redundant marking 1 man. I would like us to be able to have this flexibility to change whenever it suits though. Would also like to see our forwards have a partnership of 2 up front.

Remember the days when we used to blood young players successfully. I'm old enough to remember 16 year old DJ out smarting the Lisbon Lions. In more recentl history Derek Ferguson and Durrant played regularly for the first team at a young age. Find it hard to comprehend why our young players cannot break through despite the coaching and facilities at MP. Of current team think only McKay comes close to qualifying. Love it when one of our young ones makes a breakthrough. Hope we see some in 2017.

We were extremely fortunate to find young players like Johnstone, Parlane, Durrant and both Derek Ferguson and his older brother who would have been a top quality player if he had only listened to Souness.

We are kidding ourselves if we think that McKay is in that class. Perhaps he could develop but he needs someone like Willie Johnston coaching him so he can learn how to look after himself on the park.

Hopefully some of the young boys will come through but we might have a couple of years to wait.

mckay isn't that class, but no one in Scottish football is. he certainly has more ability than some of the players who have came through ie. Wylde, Burke, Aird etc.

Fellow bears i read on the site quite a lot about everyone's best starting eleven. Who should play and who should not. One of the biggest topics for opinion is Tavernier. "Never a defender", "can't play in a midfield 3" etc etc. For me the biggest problem is not the starting eleven its the formation. We have two of the best attacking fullbacks in the country who when they bomb forward just about always leave us exposed at the back. Why not account for this; play them more advanced and account for this with an extra defender (3-5-2). To me it makes perfect sense.

3 at the back gives the centre backs a wee bit more help (although granted we don't have an abundance of great CB's), and 5 in the middle would enable us to dominate in the middle of the park and the chance to see 2 up front. To see if Garner and Waggy could form a partnership or Doodoo and MOH - there could be a few options there.

What do you think?

24 Nov 2016 13:17:24
Three at the back is very difficult to perfect. i'd rather not change the formation that much.

24 Nov 2016 13:35:57
ive been banging on about 4-4-2.
I see your point though and would give that a go aswell.

I agree that the formation is our problem as everyone knows how we play and put extra in the middle which always makes it harder for us to play out from the back.

TBH the defence has significantly improved this season thanks to one individual and that's Clint Hill.

Apart from Hill the back five/ six, including Halliday, is exactly the same as last season, and even in the second division, was seen as needing significant improvement.

Hill is the signing of the summer without a doubt.

People saying this is a negative, since it suggests the other signings haven't worked out, but the defence needed improving and its been improved and then some, with Tavernier playing better defensively, Hodson adding great competition for the full backs and a sub GK who fans wouldn't mind seeing in the starting eleven week in week out.

That's what the fans wanted, that's what they've got.

As for formation, it won't change. Need the players we've signed to get used to it and TBF most have. Garner might need time but he will get goals in this formation, two up front or two on the wing won't make a difference.

24 Nov 2016 13:52:30
Changing formation isn't going to solve any problems. Teams will still set up the same way against us and we will get the same result. The problem we have is the amount of movement we have off the ball. More movement means more spaces, more spaces means more chances and more chances means more goals.

24 Nov 2016 14:05:00
tav can defend and is a descent right back, our defence isn't as bad as people on here think.

24 Nov 2016 16:42:53
if changing the formation doesn't change anything the why do great teams and managers all over the word do it even average teams change their formation depending how they want their team set up.
if it makes no difference everyone would play off a 4-4-2.

you people obviously just watch football if u think it doesn't make a difference its just ridiculous to think that doesn't make a difference.

24 Nov 2016 16:56:43
Not every team has to play against 10 men behind the ball every game. I know we're not Barcelona but they play 433 week in week out and they are successful because of their off the ball movement. When do you ever see Suarez, Messi and Neymar taking up the same position at every attack. They play everywhere in the attacking positions which is why they are able to create more chances.

24 Nov 2016 17:01:10
i'm not saying changing formation doesn't change anything in football in general. I mean in our case, due to the way teams play against us.

24 Nov 2016 15:24:05
3 cbs is a non starter we just don't have the quality to justify it why sacrifice a windass/ holt etc to add in senderos or wilson alongside rob and hill! We need to get the midfield fixed and the quicker rossier is back the better i'd have hoped crooks would have came in but looks as if he hasn't came on as warbs would have liked! As fraserc23 says more movement and sharper passing is required! Players need to man up at times also as we are bullied in certain areas and don't seem to boss games the way we should.

24 Nov 2016 17:42:27
Tavernier is one of our better players. It is the midfield and attack where we need better quality. Holt is a Championship player, Halliday is limited but in many respects makes up for his lack of top quality with his commitment, (if only other players in the team showed his commitment we might have more points right now) . We need to replace Miller and we need quality in midfield, (just a shame that Krancjar and Rossiter are injured) .

I also believe that we need a stronger leader. Wallace is a good player but he is not a leader.

24 Nov 2016 23:40:01
hello bears, i see a lot of valid points about formation and personnel in the team but i think the problems are a lot more basic than that, when you watch us play majority of other teams chances come from us making basic mistakes, slack passes etc and not taking the many chances we create always puts us under more pressure, thus the solution to us getting a good winning run is better ball retention and putting the ball in the net easier said i no but were not far away.

25 Nov 2016 11:13:20
We have a very difficult period of games from now until the end of the year let's see how we are on 1st Jan before we lavish praise on Hill and the defence.

24 Nov 2016 11:39:08
mark warburton has mentioned the big gulf
between the rangers first team and u20s
and says he wants b teams in the lower leauges to improve the gulf this does make sense
but if i was a younster at rangers i would be
frustrated as it seems he doesn't think they are anyway near ready for the first team
am sure there is a few of our younsters that could do the same job if not a better one than some of our fringe players and cement there self a place in the first team to do this the need to be giving a chance and this is looking very unlikley at the moment with these comments from warburton.

24 Nov 2016 12:26:29
What youth do we have that aren't on loan that could do a decent job for the first team? In my honest opinion Scottish football should follow in the foot steps of Portugal, Spain, Germany and Holland and put the youths into the lower divisions. The amount of talent coming from these areas currently is ridiculous and I have no doubt their league set up has a massive part to play in it.

24 Nov 2016 12:29:31
I was talking to a community football coach and he was talking about the boy Macrorie who's a CB in our under20s. he was saying the boy is going to be a great prospect don't know much about the boy any bears know anything about the boy?

24 Nov 2016 14:05:46
ross mcrorie was out on loan for a spell was he not? his twin brother is a very very good goalkeeper.

24 Nov 2016 14:28:47
Cheers cee the guy really rates the young guy.

24 Nov 2016 14:50:08
Robby McCrorie is a great keeper, loads of top PL clubs were sniffing around him a few years back until he was done in by another boy we had on our books at that time. Doctors weren't sure if he'd fully regain vision in one of his eyes due to the attack. Looks like all's back on track for him now though.

25 Nov 2016 07:19:11
he's been warming up with gilks and fod a few times before games. but I am 99% sure ross mcrorie went on loan to Ayr? not sure lol.

24 Nov 2016 09:06:52
Why do people still go into club shop on match days, seriously? Not a penny more! What chance have we got?

25 Nov 2016 20:14:54
