Surely they would not report it as 'terminated by mutual consent' if his contract was expired? It would simply be that he was released.

Player movement seems to be very much in one direction at the moment

Not good enough, never has been good enough, never will be good enough. Probably find that his pay off (if there was one) was negligible. Why are you getting hung up on players that will never make the grade?
