Tam McManus rates the current Rangers team better than 2008 what a ridiculous statement the 2008 team were stealy and hard to beat there team spirit was better than we are now nobody liked playing that team excluding Bayerns and man utds Cuellar was a better defender then Goldson and Ferguson was better than aribo even pedro Mendes in that era was better than Davis upfront Miller in his prime was a handful keeping Daniel cousin longer could have been BIG he was good the 2008 team was never defeated until the final whistle and it had some quality but not world class the only players who could get in that era is morelos kamara barasic tavernier maybe arfeild in his prime the current Rangers are a good side no question but not Walter's teams.

Fair point rangersfc I agree Walter's team was harder to beat 100% better defending. But imagine we could of had morelos and kent for that final in Manchester. This team definitely better going forward.

You’ve named four maybe five players that would get in the team that’s nearly half a team, surely by that logic it means there is a debate to be had? I loved the 2008 team it had some fantastic players but I think this current team plays better football and has more talented players the 2008 team did. It’s very difficult to say which is better I think we beat some decent teams on our way to the final however I believe winning the Europe league now is even harder than it was in 2008 you only need to look at some of the teams in the last 16.

For me if this side can make quarters or with a bit of luck semis it will be a tremendous achievement let’s just enjoy them as I think this side will be looked back fondly when it’s over.

It was the same Walter Smith team that played ‘anti football’ according to Messi and Barcelona. This team wouldn’t put 11 men behind the ball and I’d highly doubt qualification to any round will come via penalty shootout.

Therefore I enjoy watching the current group and brand of football a bit better.

I said it before and say it again you can't compare players from then an now both teams in those era were playing against total different oponents etc would the tic team of 08 beat the 1 of 2021 or would the tic team of 2021 beat the 08 gers squad etc yes most might say yes to most of the debates about squads who would beat or lose etc but we will all have bluetinted glasses on etc is davis better than barry ferguson to me yes but to about 40% maybe 80% would disagree with me it all part n parcel of a little debate

Only way to settle it a bit is post your top 11 squad past n present along with greatest manager that way you get some comparison to who we all thing it the real top greatest squad of all time once everyone casts there team sheet for greatest ever gers.

I think many of the current squad would have fitted in easily to the team of 2008. Somebody posted that Walter's team were 100% better defending but this team has only conceded 9 goals in 30 league games. That's pretty impressive defending in my book. I also recall that Celtic won the league in 2008, not Rangers. Comparisons are sometimes pointless but interesting.

For me more skill and flare in current team. Sir Walter though was master tactician and created a team so difficult to beat. Loved it when we drew with Barcelona and Henry complained about our tactics.

I would say this is a better team than 2008 👍🏼 Difference is the competition will be a helluva lot harder to win nowadays than it was before. The Calibre of team and player is better now IMO.

Hi sweep1,

I have to agree Tav can't defend very well.

However, we can't have our cake and eat it, he constantly runs from one end to the other acting more like a forward than a defender and has setup a few goals for us more than he has cost us.
I think that is why he gets caught out trying to defend long balls up to our half.

His stamina for his performances are second to none in our squad .

I'm probably off the mark, but that's my opinions anyway.

Doiger the manky mob did win the league that year all thanks to the governing body giving us absolutely no help with a fixture list from hell we made the final of every competition we entered that year played I believe 67-68 games won both domestic cup and took the league to the final day! If we got a little bit of help with fixtures that could have been the greatest rangers team of all time if they could have won a quadruple! But unfortunately for up Peter liewell was balls deep in the spfl.

The football we play now is streets ahead of what we played under smith in in 2008.

That doesn't mean we are a better side though, however for me not much between the two.

I think it’s almost impossible to compare the two teams. They play a completely different style of football. Smith managed to take a team built on a relative shoe string to a European final and did so in the only way that was possible for the players he had at his disposal, by being ultra defensive and extremely hard to break down. Wasn’t pretty to watch but I still loved every minute of that run to the final. I still however have a slight tinge of regret that we didn’t just come out and have a go in the final. We lined up with 5 defenders, 2 defensive mids, 2 ball playing sitting mids and 1 striker (all of whom were pretty much on their knees by the time the final came round thanks to the SFA but that’s another thing) and I remember being slightly disappointed when I saw the line up. We almost ended up playing a 7,2,1 formation for most of that game and hardly had a shot at goal. But hindsight is a wonderful thing and to be fair we really didn’t have many other options. The fact we got to the final was an unbelievable achievement in itself. As I say though, this team now is set up completely differently so is difficult to say which is actually a ‘better’ team.

Steven Davis was in the 2008 team. He signed with us on loan from Fulham in January 2008. He also started the Uefa Cup Final for us. However, if it was a choice between Davis and Mendes it would be Davis all day long for me.
