Hi Ed,

As a Liverpool supporter maybe you know the truth about the Steven Gerrard Catholic thing.

It is still rumbling on way back at the bottom of the page.

Searches show different results, some say yes Catholic some say not Catholic.

As one poster says makes no difference anyway, it's all about the football.

{Ed001's Note - it really is not relevant in Liverpool, his family and his missus' family are Catholic, but he was only ever interested in football, religion was of little interest to him. So while he is Catholic, I doubt it is in the forefront of his mind or changes how he lives.}

Excellent description Ed, and reminiscen t of most real Rangers fans

I personally have no interest in anyone else’s religious bbeliefs, I believe in god and do my own thing regarding that, but no time for organised religious groups, the biggest problem on earth, always has been.

{Ed001's Note - I think it is most of my generation to be honest.}

Doesn’t matter why he went to school or what kind of school it was we are living in 2021 couldn’t care less what religion or colour anyone is.

Thanks Ed001 mate.

I Hope the posters arguing can take that as gospel like I do .

Of course religion is irrelevant to Steven Rangers FC and our supporters.

I cannot thank you enough for your input.

Cheers my friend.

{Ed001's Note - very welcome.}

Ed, so how come in his autobiography and in many interviews he says he is not Catholic? He also did not attend a Catholic primary school and there was a Catholic secondary school far nearer his home than the one he chose? He only chose it for football reasons. He is not Catholic, he is Church of England although his family is mixed. First time I've ever disagreed with you but I'm afraid you are wrong this time. I have many friends and former colleagues in Liverpool and I have written extensively on both clubs, their history etc and nobody I know in that city has ever suggested Gerrard is Catholic.

{Ed001's Note - I don't give a toss what he said, legally he is Catholic, or he could not have got married in a Catholic church. He would have had to be confirmed to do so. It is utterly irrelevant and you are just showing your bigotry by being so desperate to argue he is not. It is exactly the same as many of my generation, we may choose to be something else, but once you have been baptised into the Catholic church, for legal purposes you are then Catholic. Unless he expressly wills differently, for example, he would be buried in a Catholic graveyard. He can choose to call himself whatever he wants, just like he can call himself English but his passport will never mention England, only the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as that is the legal entity we all 'belong' to. As I said he is not a practising Catholic, but he has to have become legally one to have had a Catholic wedding in a Catholic church. I am not sure why it matters so much, he couldn't give a toss about religion, as I said earlier. Football is his religion, like most scousers.}

There was a documentary about his life on TV a while ago and he attended a Catholic school because it had a higher level for football. I can't remember exactly but I'm sure a family member was friends with a teacher at the school who took to do with the football and he got him a place at the school. So according to that documentary he wasn't Catholic and only went to the school for his footballing talent. So who knows or who cares he's now a god in Glasgow and we all worship him 🙏😇🛐.

Why are you bringing this nonsense up billy. why give it the time of day .
why are you even thinking about it . mentioning it . contemplating it . there must be loads of other subjects much more relevant and profound than this dross?

Ed this thread should not be entertained here. Totally irrelevant.

With myself being one of the posters arguing this case Ed, my whole point is it shouldn’t matter, and it doesn’t to me and a lot of others. But to the idiots that shout about F this and F that then my point in getting to the bottom of this and arguing twice now regarding the matter with 3 different posters I’d that if people stopped to think before singing the shi* they sing they would maybe realise how offensive they’re being to our manager his family most of our players and they’re families and my lot of our previous players and staff. The reason o make such a big deal over it is that it shouldn’t matter what religion or race someone is only the person. and if people instead of saying “gerrards not a Catholic” realised actually he is maybe it would make peaoe stop to think before opening there mouths in future and embarrassing our club and themselves.

Bluebilly, it is irrelevant what religion our manager steven gerrard is as for me plain and simple he's the rangers manager and that's all i'm interested in. But seeing you've brought this up, i'm led to believe after a discussion when gerrard first came to rangers that gerrard attended a catholic school because of how good he was at football, but isn't a catholic himself 🤔 That's my belief on the matter but like i said it doesn't matter for me!

Ed, I don't give a toss about what religion anyone is. However, I will always separate the truth from supposition and your post is full of it. You do not need to be 'legally' a Catholic to marry in a Catholic church, that is so absurd it is funny. I know many, many people who married in a Catholic church and were never Catholics. Gerrard was born Church of England and still is. He has said so many times, and you have the temerity to call him a liar to suit your own agenda? Beggars belief.

{Ed001's Note - clearly you do care as you have been the one arguing.}

The Catholic Church recognizes as sacramental, the marriages between two baptized Protestant Christians or between two baptized Orthodox Christians, as well as marriages between baptized non-Catholic Christians and Catholic Christians.
Straight from the Catholic Church itself. Please do not perpetrate stupid lies just to try to make yourself look correct, Ed. If you are a writer/ journalist/ editor surely you should cherish the truth as a goal you should continually aim for. Thank you for calling me a bigot for merely telling the truth.

the catholic church of course recognises christian marriages. believe me when i got married to my second wife who is catholic i had a choice of renouncing my protestant believes and taking the prerequisite sacraments. they would not give a full marriage as such but only a blessing.
furthermore they considered it a sin for me to have divorced in the first place.

OK guys, we had our say .

I only asked out of curiosity after reading your replies to sectarian stuff then Stevie's religion was brought up (NOT BY ME) .

Seems some only read the first line of a post then start punching a keypad before reading the rest to start an argument.

Looks to me all of us agree including myself and Ed001 that Steven's or anyone else's religion at our club is "IRRELEVANT".

Cheers guys.
