Has anyone else heard that we won't be having a new kit manufacturer as such? Heard from a usually reliable source that dave king is going down the same road as david murray did a good few years ago now! Hearing the new rangers kits will be made in house with the view of the club making all the profits with no middle man! This can only be be a good thing if they don't neglect the quality of the tops, like they did the last time! The club could potentially make a killing out of kit sales, if the quality is there!

Maybe I'm too young to recall but when did Murray do this? I've only seen branded tops in my time.

05 Apr 2018 20:39:05
They were made in house but I’m sure Umbro paid to have their logo on it. It was something like that but I could be wrong was a good few years ago

I seem to remember that David Murray or Rangers owned Admiral although I'm not 100%.

It seems like an obvious route to go to maximise revenues from shirt sales but there must be a good reason why more clubs don't do it.

05 Apr 2018 20:52:17
Ah. I thought he meant unbranded.

05 Apr 2018 20:52:52
Umbro made the kits under a brand name (Rangers) as far as iam aware. I don't think Dave King will be sitting behind a sewing machine to save a few quid.

05 Apr 2018 20:54:46
It was diadora who paid to have their logo on the rangers shirts! Marco c, it was the early noughties that we made our own kits! If my memory serves me correct it started on the 2001 / 2002 season mate!

Cheers coops.

I seem to remember this period of "own strip making" as the end of our great era. I remember going abroad seeing "their" strips for sale everywhere because they were with Nike, and ours no where to be seen because we had no distribution partners. That was when I first noticed a swing in the balance of power to them. I'm not a fan of this route, better with a global partner.

05 Apr 2018 22:07:31
Not sure what we gain from making our own strips. If its so profitable why doesn't all the big clubs do it? Surely we can get a decent deal from an established kit maker? And if not, why not?

06 Apr 2018 01:07:29
Would much rather have adidas or another top brand making making our strips. I remember when we were producing our own tops and the quality was shocking. If they want to break sales records then get a top quality top made and they will fly off the shelves

06 Apr 2018 05:04:28
All for it to be honest, if they are made well. they would probably outsource it to somewhere cheap overseas like the "big brands" do.

Does the global partner thing matter with our website? Any rangers fan, anywhere in the world can buy from there, cost a wee bit extra in shipping.

Supercooper is right. David Murray had the shirts made and Diadora apparently paid to have their logo on the shirt. Which tbh I find hard to believe as if they were of inferior quality then they would have been associated with that, why would they risk damaging their brand profile on another manufacturers "cheap" shirt?

06 Apr 2018 17:10:49
Campo, there is a big market for strips no matter if you support the club and that's how we need a big game player ie Nike or Adidas on board! I remember buying my new Nike Home top back in the day over in Spain even before it was released over here! We are a massive club who can sell jerseys in sports stores all over the world! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

True buddy, and I do agree its worth considering if the mark up is hypothetically is a few quid per strip via a manufacturer opposed to 20-30 quid doing it ourselves its worth considering surely?

I'm just saying financially if the margins are much better, then it may be better just selling to gers fans lol.

I don't actually think it will happen, I do think a brand will be making them.

I have a pretty direct source on this. From what I was told, it’s a licensing deal with the kits being made by a third party and badged up as Umbro. It’s not a case of Nike or Adidas signing up to provide kit, more complicated than that apparently. definitely looks like an Umbro branded top though. Some of them were decent before and if we get a better commercial deal and associated income then fine by me. Selfishly, I’d love a Nike kit but that’s just my brand loyalty as a runner!

07 Apr 2018 09:06:12
So lifelongGer what i gather from your post, regarding our new kits, it won't be umbro who's actually making our kits, so i take it umbro will be paying rangers to have their diamond badge embroidered onto our shirts? No reason to doubt your info mate, i'm only asking the question from what you've heard! It seems this is going to be, like i also had heard and said as much in my OP, the same scenario way back when we produced our own kits in the very early noughties and diadora paid rangers money to have their brand name, sewn into our shirts!

07 Apr 2018 10:45:52
I think that’s how it works. It goes to an agency company who manufacture and then a brand added, presumably for a fee. Most kits made in the Far East/ Asia regardless but Nike Adidas have both greater buying power and minimum orders which may put clubs/ retailers off. I’m told Umbro will be the likely badge on a kit made by someone else. Seemingly happens a lot but not with Nike, Adidas etc who are the market leaders for quality and so on.

I see the runners up this year are taking 2m prize money in the SPFL.

Makes it even more important now that we do not collapse, we already lost money from being knocked out of Europe at the first hurdle, cannot let 2m go.

05 Apr 2018 21:22:18
It was over £2m for 2nd nearly £2m for 3rd and I think about £1.75 for fourth so only around £0.5m swing from 2nd to 4th.
Finishing 2nd has to be our target regardless of prize money. Hopefully get job done at Ibrox on Saturday to put Hibs and Sheep under pressure, think Sheep are at Tynecastle so hopefully points dropped.

Fair play mate, still be gutted if we end up 3rd or 4th regardless 😂.
