Seen a lot on here in the last few days debating whether Ryan Kent is a good / bad player for us so thought I’d throw in my tupence worth. First off I’d like to state that I’ve nothing overly against Kent (or for him for that matter) . In general he’s a decent enough player. I feel his strengths are his pace and his ability in one on one situations and he can show up well in the big European games when he’s given more space. However his weaknesses are still his shooting, generally his final ball, and that fact that he isn’t the best at tracking back and I don’t think I’ve ever really seen him make a tackle. The fact that Barasic isn’t the strongest defender therefore usually leaves us pretty exposed down the left. When you factor in that we spent around £7m on him (and look like we may not get much if any of that back) then you do have to question the value for money. Especially when you unfortunately look at the other side of Glasgow. In Jota they have a player that has followed pretty much the same path. A season loan followed up by a £7m move. Compare both their stats. Kent - total of 174 games, 31 goals and 30 assists. Not terrible but considering our league should probably be more. Jota - total 50 games, 17 goals and 17 assists. If he keeps that rate up then by the time he reaches 174 games it will be around 60 goals and 60 assists! Double the numbers Kent has and to be fair, the kind of figures you’d be hoping for from a £7m attacker playing for either Rangers or Celtic. So in summary, Kent definitely has ability and can perform in flashes, but also definitely isn’t consistent enough and unfortunately definitely hasn’t been worth the money we paid.

Totally agree with gers1978.Big stage for Kent tonight --lets see what he offers . he wants a move but whether it's the epl or the championship are decided with games at this level. same goes for all the other younger players who crave the big stage .

I don't think extrapolating statistics makes a fair comparison. Who knows (or cares) what Jota might do in the future. I'm no great fan of Kent but you have to compare apples with apples.

Good post Gers1978, I know which club got the better deal, Kent isn't fit to lace Jota's boots, Kent I believe including bonuses is earning about 60k a week, a complete waste of money imo, including wages, bonuses and the transfer fee he's cost us a fortune, all that money paid and yet Saturday was his first goal in the spl in 2022, yet there's certain posters on here creaming their pants about him, you couldn't make it up.

INTR. I’m not saying he isn’t. Unfortunately though it’s not all about being skilful (not when you’ve paid £7m which is the most we’ve paid for any player in decades) . Take someone like Paddy McCourt. For all intents and purpose a pretty useless player. However it was well reported at the time that he was probably the ‘most skilful’ player the other mob had. Basically a phenomenal 5 aside player but couldn’t play professional football very well. Now I’m not putting Kent in that bracket, just saying ‘skill’ isn’t everything. If we look at 2 players we’ve had in the past who both played in the ‘left of a front 3’ position. Peter Lovenkrands - bought for 1.3m, 37 goals in 129 games. Shota Arveladze (I know he could play through the middle but most of the time played off the left) - bought for £3m 44goals in 95 games. No doubt neither were as skilful however arguably both have a better return and we’re better value for what we paid.
