Can I ask you a question Ed001? As an outsider looking in, but as someone who has had years of experience and a connection to Rangers fans on here, and to an extent, the club, what's your thoughts on the type of manager we should bring in for us to be successful again? Who could we afford? Who could we attract? What is needed for us to get back to being champions? Infact, do you think we can get back to being number 1 within the next few years?

{Ed001's Note - it really depends on whether it is a long term appointment now, to take it on for the forseeable future or just one to turn things around in the short term and get it on an even keel for the next man to take over in a better place?

If you are looking at short term to just get the club going in the right direction, then you would probably have to say Warnock is the best option. I detest the man and everything he stands for. I hate his lack of integrity, the way he acts, but there is no denying that he can turn around a club and get it all pulling together. It would not be the way I would go, but if the options right now are limited, it might be a quick fix to take things on while you wait for the right one.

Other than that, the best short term fix would be to approach someone experienced to come in and guide Davis. The likes of Sean O'Driscoll or similar, that have experience gained over long years but will be willing to work with what is there and coach improvements, and is happy to be number 2.

Long term, that is a difficult one. For me I would forget the interview process. I see that as something for lower league level clubs, who have to just pick from who is willing to take the job rather than headhunt who they want. Rangers are at a top elite level of football, like any top flight club in European football, and should be able to entice someone they target, rather than hope to get lucky on who applies.

Gallardo ticks most boxes, wins trophies in a pressure cooker environment, but his English is limited (he is learning though) and he would be using you as a stepping stone. You would have to think he must have something as Barcelona did try to tempt him to leave Argentina a couple of times in the past, but he rejected the offer as he didn't feel he was ready yet. Now he feels he is ready for Europe, he has to be under consideration. There is no other manager that can offer the experience he has. Everything about his experience is so similar to what he will experience in Scotland that it does seem he is the ideal candidate.

Of the rest, Knutsen probably stands out as having at least got experience of building a team on a limited budget and having to face the reality of rebuilding after losing his better players. Because, for all Rangers are a big club, they are not financially big and are going to have to listen to offers for their best players when they come in. That means it does help having a man who has experience in that situation.

I have to say I don't know enough about Jansen to have an opinion on him, but I would be worried about his lack of experience. The time you learn how good a manager actually is, is during adversity and how well he deals with it. You need someone who has showed he can take a struggling side and turn it around. But it also needs to be someone who can do it quickly, which rules out Potter as his methods involve coaching the team over time to be better. He simply wouldn't get the time at Rangers.}

That was indeed an excellent summary Ed001, thank you!
I agree with you on Warnock on the way he acts, and his integrity (or lack of), but the thought of him at Rangers, is just depressing.
Gallardo would be top notch, but I read elsewhere that PSG had an interest in him, have you heard anything on this? If this is true, then I think that would rule him out.
If I'm being honest here, I really don't have a clue who we could realistically get in. I'm finding it very difficult to get enthusiastic, or hopeful, on who our next manager will be.

{Ed001's Note - I don't know about the PSG interest. I only know he is taking English lessons as he wants an EPL job in the future. If that is his true desire, going to PSG is not a help in that but Rangers could be the perfect stepping stone.}

Good post Ed, I would 100% agree, we need to go after someone, rather than wait to see who shows up.
Problem as always, would anyone want to come to Scotland, with a very limited budget for players.

{Ed001's Note - if they don't, then they are not what you need anyway. So anyone ruling themselves out has done you a favour.}

Very well thought out and put across Ed, enjoyed reading that ??

I feel same with Jansen if I’m totally honest.
Knutsen would be better suited for us I think.

From where u came with warnock I would say big Sam can do the same.

The Argentine guy is appealing but I think we would need an assistant who speaks Spanish and English? I don’t like the idea of interpreters.
I’d like a Scottish assistant kept on aswell, or davis to be groomed to succeed him.

There are not many outstanding candidates atm.

{Ed001's Note - Scam is too expensive and would decimate your entire transfer budget to pay his wages.}

Fair play to Ed, not just administering the site but taking the time to make a good contribution too. Decent.

{Ed001's Note - thank you.}

True Ed he’s an expensive manager, usually bonus driven though if I’m correct?
I’d offer him £2m til end of season with massive bonus if he won the league.

He would need to accept that we’re not in the financial ballpark he’s used to when demanding wages.
I know he’s not everyone’s cup of tea but I’ve always wanted him or Harry as rangers manager and I know the boats likely sailed on Harry.
He’s happily retired down the English riviera.

I only want Sam til the summer if we can’t get who we want right away, not long term.

Do u think Ed that gallardo is a realistically attainable target for us?

{Ed001's Note - you would want Redknapp? You must like a spiv then!

He would be financially attainable, River do not pay as much as you can. While he is out of a job, that makes him a realistic option. I can't see it remaining that way for long though. If you don't convince him, someone else will.}

Another great peice of information Ed

I too as I posted earlier like Gellardo and think he would be the man I would like to go after
Also agree he would be using us as a stepping stone but these then motivates him to do his best work so he gets the next big job in England down the line

I thought I read somewhere online warnock was retiring or is retired now? Maybe you could clarify?

And like Raisetheroofe said I too am finding it difficult to think who else really could come in and big a big impact a big difference and take us forward
It’s hard not knowing the budget the board would cap a mangers wage at and also what the cap would be for any new manager coming in would be offered Along with any players he could sell to top up the kitty?

Knutsen would be the next choice I think and as I said earlier again in a post or reply I thin it was to someone I don’t fancy Jansen as I do t think he has the experience and not sure what he would or could do different with this squad of players and if he could elevate them to play better.

as I said before I think the board are really going to have a difficult time on this appointment
But who knows they might just pull it out the bag with either a gellardo or someone no one even thought about

And in the mean time will be interesting to see what tune Davis and Rae can get out the squad and if they can eeek out more then Beale got out them?

{Ed001's Note - Warnock did retire, then came out of retirement to take the Huddersfield job and has now said he wants to continue to work in football.}

Always liked redknapp mate, like how he comes across in interviews, with fans, and most importantly he always got his teams playing good baa tracking football and had a great eye for a player. Very good man manager aswell.

I think for me I’d now say maybe Knutsen or gallardo now then.
Think that’s where I’m at.

I do think we need a bit of Scottish/ British involvement in the back room staff though I think that needs to be important now.

Cheers Ed good thread. ??.

Ed, is Knutson the guy that wants percentages of player transfers?

{Ed001's Note - until he is spoken to, how can anyone know if he would want that at Rangers? He gets that where he is because they are desperate to hang on to him and can't afford to pay him more without selling players. This was a way to incentivise a bigger contract for him.}

My worry now is will the fans give a new manager time to turn it around? I’m not going to give an opinion on any of the names I’ve seen as I don’t know enough about any of them but Mcinnes or Lampard I’d a no for me but I can’t see success being instant this will take time and maybe one or yei transfer windows but this toxic atmosphere has to stop and fans need to get behind the team, I know there are players at the club the fans are not keen on but abusing and booing these player is only making things worse players must dread going into that caldron to play let’s forget what has happened we can’t change that and get behind them lift their spirits snd you just never know let’s hope for a result on Thursday and again at the weekend then international break hopefully we get a few players back.
