Question.
An attacking player in an offside position (Team A) runs towards the ball but does not play the ball or prevent the opponent (Team B) from playing or being able to play the ball. What is the referee's decision?
Answer:-
It is not an offside offence so the referee allows play to continue. The attacking player is only penalised if he/ she
plays the ball or interferes with an opponent.

The IFAB ruling is clear, as described by Mr P. Sima didn't play the ball or stop the opponent playing it, so it should have been called. Pity our refs and var don't know the rules!

As soon as Sima interferes with Johnston he's offside, if indeed it was offside.

If Column had decided it was a penalty and asked Walsh to review AND Walsh agreed it was a penalty, at that point they'd have checked for offside in the buildup and if it was offside a foul would have been given for offside, not a penalty.

The question Clement (rightly) asked is why that didn't happen. No review took place to even get to the offside and the only explanation for that is they deemed it not a handball, such is ridiculous.

No one expects the penalty should have been given if Sima was offside, the question is because it didn't get that far.

And before anyone else incorrectly writes the rules: Sima isn't offside if he doesn't do anything that requires a reaction from Johnstone (remains passive) . If he stands still and Johnstone runs over and punches it out, penalty. Sima trying to play on when offside means Johnstone has to take action because of Sima, making him active so offside.

So it would never have been a penalty if he was offside. But that's not the question, because it never got that far.

He did stop him playing the ball by going for the ball. . Sima was offside. sima ran towards the ball . it would be different if sima stood still but he never he ran from the 18 yard line to the by line to get the ball.

Clement 56 - I’m not one for conspiracies but the freeze frame they released in the second have to show he was offside isn’t the correct image. If you look at it again the ball has already left Lundstrums foot……I think they released that image because they know they totally arsed things up and they are also refusing to release the audio….

Sima might have well been offside but unless they show us the process of trying to find the correct frame where the ball is being struck by Lundstrum and then putting the lines on the pitch how can we be sure he actually was?

You are missing the point it was a bye kick not a free kick which suggests rangers player hit ball out last even though it was clear Celtic player played ball out so it’s either. A free kick Celtic or corner rangers or penalty rangers there is no rule that let's them say it’s a bykick.

If they are saying it wasn't a penalty as it wasnt handball why did they release the video in the 2nd half suggesting it wasnt a penalty as it was offside. The ifab rule clearly shows offside doesn't come into it. They are either incompetent and don't know the laws of the game and are trying to cover it up or something more sinister. Release the audio tape assuming Big Peter hasn't had it doctored.
