Talk of Steven Davis signing on as player coach.

From where.

It doesn’t work. Defoe said himself when he tried to be a player coach, it’s too difficult to focus on both jobs. When Kenny Miller was player manager at Livingston that didn’t work either because how can you manage the team if you’re playing and the dugout is empty.

I honestly think Rangers should just cut Davis lose along with the other guys that are leaving. By all means help him get fit again but his playing days are over. If he wants to be a coach then commit to that, go do your badges and earn your stripes, while working with the B team for a few years.

Is there any possibility he can do this in the B team? I see that's how the clubs down south are doing it now with experienced player coaches.

Kenny miller left because regardless of the fact Martindale was only a coach and now the manager. Davie Martindale is part of the ownership of Livingston. That is certainly well known to many who know him about livi but because of his past that would bring up much more red flags and questions than if he were a manager or coach. That kind of dianamic were your assistant is really your boss wouldn't work for many.

Give Davis the reserve team coaching job, he can push the young lads harder and maybe the reserve team will start to produce more 1st team talent, worth a shot, Guys a Rangers Legend without a shadow of a doubt.

Too old to play for b team.

it's worked for many fife, he said player/ coach not player/ manager, he would simply spend his day's coaching kids while having occasional spells on the bench, a good thing g imo.

How was your trip to the final John? Would imagine it was a far superior presentation than ours. Did you have a meal at the stadium I saw the chef on Sunday Brunch last week and some of the food he made looked amazing and who did we sign.

This has been around since Davo started his coaching badges he will be on a new contract in a coaching role he wants to be a Rangers manager in the future - very well thought of at Ibrox and a Rangers man through and through - he will still be registered on the playing staff for next season.

If this is true he will I think he will be a coach but with the option he could play if needed and hopefully take his bow at the end of the season and #56.

Unfortunately too old for the first team too.

His playing days are done. The guy will turn 39 in Janaury.

Also, just because he’s a nice guy and a Rangers man doesn’t mean he can coach or manage a football club. Ally McCoist is case and point. Seriously, we’ve been here before guys.

This would be a great move, mainly a coach but he would be ready to step in if there was an emergency. I can see him in a continental style sweeper position spraying passes around.

verdant, are you not getting this or has your ego taken over

he's maybe staying as a player/ coach, possibly with an eye to the future,

nobody here said “ he can coach or manage a club

are you trying too hard to make yourself look like your very clued up on the pro game,

in any business when you renise someone you want to keep, you act, , you seem recently to have too much too say, and your saying it too loud and frequently

if steven davis is showing promise as a coach, you keep him in your employ, trying desperately every day to look like you know more than the professionals running rangers is becoming laughable,

Sorry but Davis was down 2 years ago time is up either move to a lower team and get some game time to Finnish out career or hang up the boots and go into coaching.

He could turn out a grew coach as well to be fair.

I remember McCoist taking over Rangers and he couldn’t coach or manage a team to save his life. I also remember guys like McDowall and Durrant being given ridiculous contracts and neither were fit for purpose. There was a culture of ‘jobs for the boys’ running through the club which the entire fanbase wanted stamped out.

When Warburton took over we were told David Weir would tell him what the club was all about. Because weir was a great defender he would be a great coach we were told, but he wasn’t. It was a disaster with interviews that constantly tried to say that Weir wasn’t the defensive coach, with no explanation as to why or what he actually was doing.

Defoe took on a role as a player/ coach and in a detailed interview explained that he could not do both jobs to the best of his ability at the same time - It had to be one of the other. I mean think about it, how often does someone take on a player coaching role and perform both of those roles well? You almost never hear about, do you? There must be a reason for that.

Will a guy who is 39 in Janaury, and just suffered a major injury, be a valuable player asset for Rangers next season? I doubt that. Will he be a valuable member of the coaching staff given he has no track record in that role and also has the distraction of having to play? Who knows. Most of this stuff surrounding Davis is driven by emotional sentiment. If the club really needs a new coach then Europe is full of guys who have years of experience in that role at top clubs.

Rangers should help the guy recover from his injury - I get that. For me, that’s where it should end.

Davis will be registered as a player next season with the hope being he can transition into a coaching role. Dunno where you get his playing days are done verdant because Beale wants him in the first team squad next season.

John27 i never said he would or should play for the B team mate, Simply he could do a job coaching the b team, good option for Davis if that's a possibility, he is well past his best.
Can't remember us ever having 38 yr old players in the Reserve team.
Ive never said he would be a good player coach, but rather a decent option to coach our young lads, he mat have to start even lower, but he can learn a lot from Beale and his coaching team that's for sure.

Verdant I'm totally with you on that players should always start Thier coaching at lower level to get rid of mistakes and learn.

I always remember mccoist team lifting trophy first season we were put to bottom of leagues league already won at Ibrox last day season he puts out a defensive team said more important to win than put on a show ? won 1 nil but to be fair it was horrible to watch and I lost faith in coisty that day.

Think the two errors we made were not letting mccoist go earlier and also sacking Stuart McCall without a transfer window still say McCall would have brought us on with some transfers he took the fall for mccoists poor team and mccoist was responsible for a lot of higher wages than was necessary at the time.

the coisty story was unique and will never happen again,
