The last few days we've been speaking a bit about our captain tav and the right back position in general. I know this question will have varied answers depending what era you watched the rangers in but here goes anyway.
Where does james tavernier sit with you regarding all the rangers right full backs you've watched over the years at ibrox ?
The best ever rangers right full back for me that i've seen at ibrox was the superb gary stevens ?What a footballer this guy was with an incredible engine and pace to go with it ?.

Walter not in the top ten.

However top re goals.

C'mon John27, not in the top ten?
Name the ten that, you think, are/ were better than him.

Would say the question should be where does he rank for goals ratio for a non striker, right up there for me.
He’s not a natural defensive full back so difficult to compare him with former right backs.
Porini I liked, took a bit of time to settle but in the couple of seasons he gave he was no nonsense.

Sandy jardine for me coops the man was a machine and could also play lots of position.

Cant compare him with past right backs, because he isn't one!

6.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 09:10:24
But he is one BAR72?.

7.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 09:12:17
Gary Stevens was some player! Not having it, that Tavs not in the top ten?

8.) 06 Jul 2023

My three favourite RBs were Porini, Jardine, and Hutton. However on where we were and where we are now Tav is up there, although not a true FB.

If been following Rangers since the 90s and he’s the best RB I’ve ever seen at the club by some margin.

We can compare tav to who ever we want
McPherson
Porrini
Stevens
Ricksen
Reyna
Cough

And the best I’ve ever seen Caldow
Imo all better
Not forget greig although predominantly a lb he is our highest scoring full back ever. Hardly ever took a penalty.

True blue that’s a more realistic comparison. John greig imo just shades it because hardly took a penalty.

120 goals for rangers.

Stevens was a level up from Tavernier so was porini verdant, would go as far as saying Alex Cleland was a better defender not a better footballer tho, i rate Tavernier very highly, but some will be surprised with how many games Sterling plays at rb this season.

Gary Steven’s way ahead of tavernier, jardine way ahead of tavernier. Honestly tavernier has great stats but he’d struggle to make my top ten.

Over the years, the players I have witnessed who were better than Tav, were Jardine, Stevens, Porrini, Fernando and Hutton. All technically better than Tav, but nowhere near as important when coming down to goal scoring alone.
The above statement from Verdant stating that Tav is the best from the 90s, by "some margin", is just not true!

15.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 10:23:59
Monty I have followed rangers since the mid 50s.

16.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 10:48:29
Big Ben, it is all about opinions, also we talk across different decades, I talk 50s. Some talk 2000s.

17.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 10:55:11
John27,is tav not rangers highest scoring full back over greigy mate ?.

18.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 10:57:41
I beg your pardon John27,greig is about 19 goals in front of tav but i think tav will overtake that mate ?.

19.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 11:03:26
Gary Stevens is only one that would put ahead of Tav, however the position has changed so much that calling it a full back is a tough one.

Although full backs did get forward years ago thier first job was to stop crosses and defend back post. I think Tav is actually better at that than he is given credit for, the problem is that he plays in a really high position and we get caught out in the channel behind him.

For me that's the managers responsibility though as it's how he is asked to play.

20.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 11:21:08
Walter no, greig scored 120 for gers.

21.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 11:22:24
Just saw your other post Walter, he will overtake that if he stays.

22.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 11:25:41
Sir Walter John pointed out Greig didn’t take penalties more than half of Tav’s goals come from the spot.

23.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 12:02:31
Tav is a great right back obviously better going forward but doesn’t make him less of a player. Not in the top ten is outrageous.

24.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 12:13:27
maurice ross the best i've ever seen, that goal in the CIS 2005 cup final hahaha

Not serious by the way :P.

25.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 12:31:32
Gary Stevens for me best right back I have seen at ibrox.

26.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 12:38:04
Tav is better than Hutton and porrini also better than McPherson fgs lol
Jardine ricksen stevens tav fair enough but even gough wasn’t a rb
Some of the flak tav gets is shocking.

27.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 12:41:39
This is correct G4,but remember tav has also over ? assists as well as over 100 goals so on assists tav is in front of greig my friend.

28.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 15:06:49
Tav should not be mentioned in the same breath as John Greig?‍♂️.

29.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 15:37:12
Being born in the 70s Steven’s would be my first pick RB. Ricksen then Tav before Porrini for me but he was a proper RB and the others all prefer being on the front foot. Greig and Jardine from footage I’ve seen levels above them all.

30.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 19:30:16
Anestis Argyriou #1 :P.

31.) 06 Jul 2023
06 Jul 2023 21:52:31
Stevens Ricksen Hutton Porrini for me all above tav from players I've saw. Greig and Jardine obvioys. Other older posters will have saw more, so don't think not in top 10 is too outrageous.
